THE HOUSING AUTHORITY OF THE COUNTY OF SANTA BARBARA RECEIVES 2 NATIONAL AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE FOR PROJECT DESIGN AND PROGRAM INNOVATION: AFFORDABLE HOUSING - THE GOLDEN INN FAMILY AND SENIOR IN SANTA YNEZ, CA

These awards exemplify best practices that can be replicated by other housing authorities across the country.

Lompoc, CA, August 28, 2017- The Housing Authority of the County of Santa Barbara has been named the recipient of 2 industry awards from the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) for programs and services that have enhanced and/or changed the lives of its residents.

The Golden Inn project is a thriving 7.3 acre campus-like development in the Santa Barbara wine country that provides a mix of multi-generational housing and senior services to low income individuals and families.

The Senior apartments are owned in partnership by the Housing Authority of the County of Santa Barbara, Surf Development Company, Rona Barrett Foundation, and MUFG Union Bank. The 60 unit mix includes 20 studio units and 40 one-bedroom units. Each unit is equipped with an independent kitchen and there is a commercial kitchen adjacent to the dining facility in the community center. Approximately 20% of the building space is designated for common use and includes a beauty parlor, computer room, library, card room, and other multi-use rooms for clubs and organizations. Throughout the common area are intimate seating areas where residents can read a book, sip coffee, and form lasting friendships. There is a central courtyard with ample seating for seniors and visitors to take in the view of surrounding rolling hills and vineyards. The ambiance resembles a new 4-star hotel both in architecture and interior design.

The Rona Barrett Foundation actively recruits community support through fundraising efforts. The Santa Ynez Valley community has embraced this development from the start through financial support and volunteer services. For example, the on-site activities director's salary and operating costs are fully funded by the Rona Barrett Foundation through community fundraising. The Housing Authority of the County of Santa Barbara provides property management and maintenance staffing.
